Prawn Nebula — A Cosmic Garden of Light

The Wonder

Some nebulae are beautiful because of their delicate structure. Others command attention through colour, scale and sheer luminosity.

The Prawn Nebula (IC 4628) is one of the latter.

Located approximately 6,000 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius, this enormous star-forming region is one of the southern sky’s most striking examples of a luminous emission nebula. Its vast clouds of glowing gas and intricate dark structures create an almost organic appearance—resembling the shape and flowing form of a giant prawn suspended among the stars.

But what makes the Prawn particularly fascinating is its extraordinary richness of colour and structure.

Across the image, luminous regions of hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen intertwine with dark dust lanes and bright young stars, creating a complex celestial landscape that seems almost alive.

A Nebula With a Hidden Personality

The Prawn Nebula is not one simple cloud.

It is a vast complex of glowing gas, dark dust and young stars, with different regions responding to radiation in different ways. Powerful ultraviolet light from massive young stars energises the surrounding gas, causing it to glow at characteristic wavelengths.

The resulting structures resemble vast cosmic gardens—pillars, ridges, cavities and filaments illuminated from within.

The distinctive colours in this artwork are a visual interpretation of those different emissions. Hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen each tell a different part of the story, allowing structures that would otherwise blend together to become visible.

The result is a nebula that feels almost three-dimensional—a luminous environment rather than a flat cloud in space.

A Stellar Nursery in Full Colour

Behind the extraordinary appearance is one of the most fundamental processes in the universe: the birth of stars.

Deep within the Prawn’s molecular clouds, gravity is gathering gas and dust into dense regions. As these concentrations collapse, new stars begin to form.

The youngest and most massive stars then begin to transform the environment around them. Their intense radiation illuminates the surrounding gas, while powerful stellar winds carve cavities and compress nearby clouds.

In this sense, the Prawn Nebula is both a birthplace and a sculpting ground for stars.

The same stars that illuminate the nebula are also helping to shape its future.

Why It Appears So Colourful

The human eye is poorly equipped to see the full visual richness of a faint nebula.

Much of the light emitted by these enormous clouds is extremely faint, and some of the most informative wavelengths are outside the range of human vision. Astrophotography changes that.

By collecting specific wavelengths over extended periods and combining them carefully, the hidden structure of the nebula can be reconstructed.

The resulting palette can reveal subtle variations that would otherwise remain invisible—from glowing hydrogen regions to delicate oxygen-rich structures and sulfur emissions embedded within the cloud.

The colour therefore serves a purpose beyond aesthetics.

It becomes a map of the nebula’s physical processes.

A Journey Through Time

The Prawn Nebula lies roughly 6,000 light-years from Earth.

The light recorded in this artwork therefore began its journey thousands of years ago, travelling across the Milky Way before finally reaching our planet.

When you look at the Prawn, you are seeing a moment from the distant past—a snapshot of a stellar nursery as it existed thousands of years ago.

And because the nebula itself is continually evolving, the landscape we see today has already changed during the time its light has been travelling towards us.

Every astrophotograph is, in its own way, a portrait of history.

From Photons to Photograph

Capturing the extraordinary colours and faint structures of the Prawn Nebula required the accumulation of large amounts of astronomical data.

Long-exposure imaging allows the camera to collect the incredibly faint photons emitted by the nebula. Multiple exposures are then combined to increase signal and reveal structures hidden within the noise and background sky.

Specialised narrowband imaging can isolate the characteristic emissions of hydrogen-alpha (Hα), sulfur (SII) and oxygen (OIII), making it possible to explore the nebula’s complex internal structure.

The resulting data was carefully calibrated, integrated and processed using advanced astrophotography techniques. Particular attention was given to preserving the delicate relationship between the bright emission regions, dark dust and subtle colour transitions.

The final artwork is therefore built from many individual moments of captured starlight, assembled into a single view of this extraordinary cosmic landscape.

The Astrophotographer’s Perspective

The Prawn Nebula is one of those objects that rewards curiosity.

At first, the eye is drawn to its extraordinary colour. Then the structure begins to emerge. Dark lanes appear between luminous clouds. Filaments lead towards brighter regions. Young stars reveal themselves within the surrounding glow.

The longer you look, the more complex the nebula becomes.

That is what makes this object so compelling to photograph.

The goal was not simply to produce a colourful image, but to reveal the layered structure and energy hidden within one of the southern sky’s most unusual stellar nurseries.
